Training To Be An NLP Practitioner
Posted on November 16th, 2010 No commentsNeuro-linguistic programming, NLP for short, came about in the 1970′s as a different method by which to help people in need of psychological therapy. Today, it is still practiced and focuses on helping people maintain a high level of self-awareness and giving them effective communication skills. For those looking to become a professional NLP practitioner and coach, there are many different programs that offer certification in NLP, with differing ways of doing so.
There is no set governing body for NLP practice either nationally or internationally. There is therefore some differentiation among certification programs provided by various institutes. All of the programs seek to achieve the same goal of NLP’s founders, however, so the programs will provide somewhat similar course studies. That is not to say that all of the courses are identical, because standards have changed out significantly as more and more practitioners develop their own methods and teaching styles. Most individuals are trained in NLP by attending a seminar or workshop of variable lengths. For example, in Europe, training may last from as little as 2-3 days to a program of nearly nine months.
For those seeking to become a master NLP practitioner, the program will likely require more extensive training. In order to attain this status, the trainee will be required to not only master the techniques of basic NLP therapy, but they will need to show that they have the ability to create new methods and ideas to use toward further NLP development. A master NLP practitioner must be able to help people while empowering them. The idea is to teach people new ways of coping and feeling good about themselves while having them believe they are responsible for curing themselves. This requires a great deal of charisma, something that is not necessarily teachable.
Becoming a life coach or a master NLP practitioner may not be everyone’s goal. Some are interested in helping others with self-empowerment and then moving on to the next patient. Basic certification often requires a few days or a couple of weeks in a seminar or workshop setting. These sessions may last all day and provide optional evening sessions. No two programs will be exactly the same, but they will follow the founders’ guidelines and use methods approved by the Society of NLP. Candidates who complete the training are certified NLP Practitioners.
NLP practitioners can go on to become a life coach or a master NLP practitioner. Once the basic course of study is completed, they will receive their certification. From there, many NLP options are available.
